Comprehensive Consultation (30 minutes):
Recommended every 2 years. Includes a refraction for prescriptions, external and internal ocular health assessments and intraocular pressure measurement. It is important to be tested even when you are not having problems in order to detect early disease changes.
Diabetes Consultation (30 minutes):
Recommended every year. Includes a comprehensive consultation, plus dilating the patient's pupils to enable the optometrist to fully assess the retina for any diabetic changes, which are potentially sight-threatening.
Children's Consultation (30 minutes):
Recommended every 2 years, or more frequently if there is a visual problem. Includes a comprehensive consultation plus binocular vision and accommodation screenings, which can contribute to learning difficulties.
Dilation (20 minutes for dilation and 15 minutes for consultation):
Upon recommendation by the optometrist, drops are put in the patient's eyes which dilate the pupils, improving the view of the retina for health assessment. The effect usually lasts for 4-6 hours, often blurring the vision and making the patient sensitive to bright lights. It is advised that the patient wear sunglasses and brings a driver as they should not drive until the dilation drops have worn off.
Visual Field Assessment (30 minutes):
Upon recommendation by the optometrist, the visual field machine tests the patient's peripheral visual field's sensitivity to light and detects abnormalities. This is an important screening test for ocular nerve damage seen in glaucoma, optic nerve diseases and some tumours.
Digital Retinal Photography (15 minutes):
This is a state-of-the-art method of recording disease changes over time.
Contact Lens Fitting (30 minutes):
Includes assessing the suitability of contact lenses for the patient, deciding the best contact lens type for their needs, refraction for the contact lens prescription and fitting the lenses. Contact lens care and maintenance procedures and insertion and removal techniques are taught to the patient.
Contact Lens Aftercare and Followup (15 minutes):
It is important to review contact lens wearing regularly to ensure safe lens wear. This includes reviewing the fit of the lenses and assessing the ocular health.
Disease Management Consultations (30 minutes):
Ocular diseases, such as Macula Degeneration (MD), may need to be reviewed regularly to detect changes and arrange referral for specialist management.
