It is extremely important for the health of your eyes that you follow the instructions of your optometrist when storing and cleaning your contact lenses. Poor compliance with instructions may lead to potentially serious eye infections.
All contact lenses must be cleaned each time they are removed from the eye. This prevents the build up of deposits which can make the contact lenses uncomfortable and more likely to harbour dangerous microorganisms. It is also important to dispose of your contact lenses when they reach the end of their safe, usable life.
Contact Lens Care Materials:
- Contact Lens Case (Storage Case)
- Multipurpose Solution
- Clean Hands
Cleaning Contact Lenses:
To clean your contact lenses, wash your hands thoroughly with lanolin free soap and rinse well under tap water. Dry your hands on a lint free towel. Remove the contact lens from the eye or the storage case.
Special contact lens cleaning solutions are designed for each type of contact lens and are applied to the lenses while gently rubbing the lenses between two fingers using an appropriate cleaning solution.
Storing Contact Lenses:
Contact lenses should be cleaned before each storage. Store contact lenses fully submerged in fresh multipurpose solution in a clean contact lens case. Each contact lens should be stored in a separate compartment of the contact lens case. Storage in this way will disinfect the lenses and aid in the removal of deposits absorbed into the lens during the last wear.
Keep the lenses out of direct sunlight and at normal room temperature.
Avoid:
- Changing your contact lens care protocol without advice from your optometrist
- Substituting the prescribed contact lens solution
IMPORTANT- Water, distilled water, mouth wash or saliva must not be used to clean contact lenses as this will damage your contact lenses and may introduce potentially devastating bacteria or fungal elements to your eyes.
