Selecting a Spectacle Lens
Most spectacle lenses are manufactured from specially designed plastics or resin.  This makes the lenses more impact resistant (for safety), light weight (for comfort) and more versatile (for frame choice).

Our primary manufacturer of lenses is HOYA, who are renound for their excellent quality and optics.  We also have access to Carl Zeiss, SOLA and Essilor lens technologies.

Most of our lenses are manufactured in Australian Laboratories located in Brisbane, Caloundra, Adelaide and Melbourne.  A small number of the more complex lenses are manufactured in Japan or Germany.

Our staff are constantly on the look-out for the latest in lens technology.  Consequently our recommendations will change according to advancements in quality and manufacturing of spectacle lenses.

Selection:

Lenses are the functional part of spectacles.  They are custom made for each eye, according to the prescription determined by the optometrist, and often have a different power for each eye.

There is a wide range of lenses to choose from, and these are constantly evolving.  The latest technologies are improving the clarity, cosmesis and comfort of spectacles with lightweight, thinner lenses, non-stick easy-clean coatings, improved photochromatic technology (such as Transitions®) and apsheric designs to reduce peripheral distortions.

Lens Types:

-  Distance
-  Reading
-  Computer
-  Bifocal
-  Trifocal
-  Multifocal
-  Unique Specialist Lenses

Most lenses can be made into prescription sunglasses.  Our optometrists and optical dispensers will be able to recommend the most suitable lens for your visual needs.

It may be necessary to have several pairs of spectacles to maximise vision and comfort.  We encourage our patients to consider that the average spectacle is expected to last at least 2 years.  It is wise to invest in a well made and designed lens that you will be wearing every day.  A $700 set of spectacles will be costing you less than $1 per day - why would you spend any less?
