Visual Field Tests

We have invested in the gold standard of visual field testing equipment, a Carl Zeiss Humphrey Field Analyser. In conjuction with our Carl Zeiss Cirrus OCT, this instrument is essential in the diagnosis and management of Glaucoma.

How does it work?

Visual fields testing (also known as computerised perimetry examination) provides the Optometrist with specific information on the status of your vision, in particular, the parts of your peripheral or side vision that you may not even be aware of.

The test itself only takes a few minutes and is completely painless.  Once your test results are transferred to your digital eye health record, the Optometrist will take a few minutes to review the information and compare trends over time.  They will then discuss the results with you.

How will you benefit?

Over 300,000 Australians currently suffer from glaucoma, which has few symptoms and can lead to blindness. The nerve fibres in the back of your eye are progressively destroyed by this condition causing permanent loss of sight.  A visual fields test is capable of picking up the initial stages of this condition before significant loss of sight. There is no cure for glaucoma and damage is permanent, therefore early detection and treatment are essential.

This test is also useful in the diagnosis and management of other health conditions associated with the brain including tumors and strokes.

Who should have it?

Visual fields tests are recommended for people over the age of 40 or where there is an increased risk of conditions that can cause irreversible vision loss.

Glaucoma damages the peripheral vision, resulting tunnel vision as in the above image.
